HowHeAsked Platinum Proposal: Lindsey & Robert
How We Met
Rob and I met after my best friend Vanessa saw him at a wedding last May and told him, “I have a girl for you.” We grew up in the same neighborhood with the same friends, and had probably crossed paths dozens of times before Memorial Day weekend last year, when we went on our first date.
We met in Coney Island and spent the night walking up and down the boardwalk, talking for hours and wondering how we hadn’t met sooner. We spoke about his life as an ironworker and mine as a dance teacher, and we were truly interested and enthralled by the very different lives we both led.
We’ve spent the last year growing in love, not only for each other, but for our families and friends as well. I finally knew what everyone meant when they said, “It happens fast…when you know, you know.” We both knew. We complement each other’s strengths and support each other’s weaknesses. We’ve become so close through both the worst and best of times, and I knew very early on that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with this man.
How He Asked
On July 24, 2017, my sister KC asked me to go to the park with her to scout out a space to choreograph a concept video she’s been working on. This seemed totally normal to me because as a choreographer, KC is constantly thinking of outstanding and sometimes outlandish ideas for dances, and I love helping her sort them out in her brilliant mind. When I walked onto the field of the park I grew up in my entire life, music started playing from my favorite musical, Hamilton.
Rob would always laugh and shake his head when he’d come home and it would be blaring through the apartment, often accompanied by me rapping and singing every line.
Suddenly, my students (I’m a teacher) came running onto the field and started dancing to my favorite song from the show: “Helpless.”
I watched in awe as all of my and Rob’s family and friends started walking onto the field to watch this amazing flash mob. The performance ended with Rob rapping Hamilton‘s part in the song…and then getting down on one knee and proposing to me with my grandmother’s ring.
I was very close with my grandmother; she passed away in December. I am so grateful, however, that she was able to meet the man I will spend the rest of my life with. The significance of me wearing her ring fills my heart every day and I could only hope to have a marriage as wonderful as her and my grandfather’s. I immediately said yes and spent the next hour hugging our families and friends while the sun set.
My fiancé chose platinum because it’s stronger and the color won’t fade. It also holds the diamond in place better. Since it’s my grandmother’s diamond, it’s something very near and dear to my heart. I like knowing that it’s platinum and a bit stronger and more precious…just like the diamond it encloses!
