How They Asked Platinum Proposal: Heather and Will
How We Met
It was 2010 and I’d just graduated high school. That September I was off to Rhode Island to attend Johnson & Wales University, where I met my best friend Will freshman year. We were introduced by my roommate who, at the time, worked the front desk of our dorm. One day she asked me to come down and bring her ice cream, and sitting next to my roommate was Will who also felt the need to chime in and say he wanted some too. Even when we first met he was demanding!
After that, we became best friends. We’d do our weekly mall trips accompanied by our favorite Chinese food (or in his case, Popeyes). Slowly our friendship turned into something else…the next thing you know, we’re dating. Then, during my senior year, we moved in together in a small little apartment in Rhode Island. After graduation, we went back to my home state of Delaware and slowly saved and purchased our first home together. We’re getting married on May 26th, and I honestly am so happy I decided to get him ice cream that day—I gained a best friend and the love of my life.
How They Asked
My engagement was perfect all the way around. On our first trip outside the continental US, we decided to go to Puerto Rico since that’s where most of my family is from/resides. On Will’s birthday, my family had planned a trip to go hiking in El Yunque, the island’s national rain forest. I also want to add that before I left, he kept pushing me to put makeup on! (In the end it totally made me happy; he knows me so well.) But back to the story…my parents wanted to take Will to see the waterfalls and plant life and honestly, I was just so excited to go. Keep in mind our hike was about five miles up and down cliffs and around waterfalls, so it’s not something that can be done in 20 minutes. We got to the entrance, parked the car and started our adventure. At the time I thought I was in shape, but it took me a little while longer to hike than I thought!
We started taking photos and enjoying the views; we stopped at the first waterfall and realized it was super crowded, so we couldn’t even go swimming—bummer. Instead, we hiked a little further up to the top of a waterfall. It was a little tidal pool, so of course, I had to go in and get the rest of my family to join.
Afterward, I noticed something shiny on the ground. I got extremely excited because people find things all the time up there. I found a metal pin and turned around to show everyone—that’s when it happened. Will went into his backpack, dropped to one knee and popped the question! I honestly just started crying, I was so happy and so moved. And that’s how my best friend popped the question. And yes, for those of you asking, we did finish the hike.
I love vintage rings and vintage-inspired rings, and I wanted a ring that represented that. I’m a graphic designer, so I’m big on the small details. To make it fun, Will asked me to pick out five rings that I would love to wear someday. Honestly, I think he was worried I wouldn’t like something if he picked it. But to my surprise, he picked my favorite one out of the bunch! Some people say they want to upgrade later in life, but this one is perfect for me. It has the vintage feel and my favorite color—two sapphires—hidden in the band. I love my ring.
